The dialectic of "Green". Buildings as living machines

National Great Rivers Research and Education Center Confluence Field Station

I read an article this morning  titled "What is a sustainable roof?" in the Eco-struture magazine ( http://www.eco-structure.com/ ). The article was written by James L. Hoff a research director for this organization http://www.roofingcenter.org/ . He speaks about the emerging Roof point system which is pilot program similar to LEED certification only more specifically deals with integratable roof systems. But as the article points out so elequontly, the roof is /could/ should be a dynamic part of a living building and it's environs, that has great capacities for affecting not only the structure beneath it but when responsibly designed and cared for can have a tremendously positive impact on the rest of the world. We spend most of our time in buildings shouldn't they all be learning environments?
